EXCLUSIVE: Romano confirms the surprise interest Man City had in the helpless Chelsea defender, saying, “It is true.”
Marc Cucurella had just been signed by Chelsea a year prior, and they were thrilled to have outbid Manchester City for his services.
We’ve been trying to get rid of him for a year, and on the day before the deadline we were just inches away from obtaining him on loan, but we still don’t know what to do with the left back.
But it seems as though there was a move to let him go in January. Fabrizio Romano claimed that Manchester City made a loan bid to him in January, six months after missing out on him in the summer, in his exclusive piece for Caughtoffside.
“However, it is true that at the beginning of January, Manchester City contacted Chelsea with a loan offer for Marc Cucurella. A non-binding buy option clause was additionally added. After Chelsea rejected him, Cucurella and Man City had nothing left to do because they wanted to keep him at the club.
It will be challenging to get rid of Cucurella permanently because he agreed to sign the contract for such a significant number of money and was paid such a large salary. It now appears like taking out a series of loans before covertly exiting the club through the back door is the most likely course of action, similar to so many other of our disastrous big-money signings.
