Mauricio Pochettino will be planning an ambitious assault for the top-four while Chelsea sits in eleventh place in the Premier League with exactly the same number of points after eight games.
Following an excellent 4-1 victory over Burnley, Chelsea extended their unbeaten record to three games. Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues seem to have finally turned a corner despite a poor start to the Premier League season.
The Chelsea manager said that his team should be proud of their performance following the west Londoners’ triumph at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon. “You feel proud when you achieve that when you concede first and then need to break down the opponent,” stated Pochettino.
“I believe that the team was performing well when we gave up the first opportunity, which was unfair given how well the squad was performing. We played well as a team as a whole, and we scored before the first half was out, which always boosts confidence a little bit. In the second half, we had the game under control.
Pochettino described how he’ll keep everyone focused on the task at hand before what will be an ambitious push for a Champions League qualification berth, with Chelsea sitting in eleventh on just as many points. The 51-year-old continued, “It is always about performance in football, and players need to feel like they deserve to play. It’s important to be consistent in every game if we want to battle for great things and it will be healthy for competition between them. Our team is incredibly talented, but right now, due to various factors and circumstances, we are unable to fully utilize that talent. With the players healthy, there will be fierce competition, which will benefit the squad by allowing us to maintain the level at which we must contend for major victories.
With that in mind, football.london has examined Chelsea’s future Premier League games to see how they stack up against their top-four competitors.
On October 21, Arsenal (H)
There are few sporting events as significant as the forthcoming London derby between Chelsea and bitter rivals Arsenal. With five victories and two draws from their first seven games, the Gunners had an undefeated start to the season and are currently third in the standings.
Brentford (H) – 28th of October
The next London team to visit Stamford Bridge in the league is Brentford, so there will be another matchup in the city. Even though the Bees have only earned one victory and seven points so far this season, their counterattacking strategy makes them a formidable foe.
Spurs (A) – November 6
Tottenham, who have gained momentum under new manager Ange Postecoglou, will be the final London derby on the menu. Spurs’ fierce play style will make for an alluring and entertaining matchup as they face the team that is now second in the league after a few recent late victories.
On November 12, Manchester City (Home)
The final match of the following five league games will be at home against league champions Manchester City, who are seeking a second straight league championship. After losses in the league and cup over the last week, Pep Guardiola’s team hasn’t been at their best, but they still lead the rest of the division.
Northampton Town (A) – November 25
While Chelsea will get a brief respite over the upcoming international break from their demanding schedule of games, a trip to St. James’ Park is not recommended for the faint of heart. Just ask Paris Saint-Germain! The Blues will actually be licking their lips because Paris will host Eddie Howe’s team to Les Parc des Princes just three days later in the Champions.
