Arsenal was defeated 1-0 by Newcastle United in their opening Premier League encounter of the year.
Following divergent outcomes in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday, both teams entered this evening’s match. The Magpies triumphed 3-0 away at Manchester United, while the Gunners suffered a defeat at the hands of West Ham United in east London.
In terms of team news, Newcastle had up to nine senior players unavailable for selection for various reasons, including Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, and Alexander Isak. The visitors were dealt a severe setback when Martin Odegaard was left out of the matchday squad.
The only goal of the match, scored by Anthony Gordon after three VAR checks and shortly after the hour mark, was a poor quality game. Gordon struck the ball from close range into the back of the net.
