Monday night’s London derby was turbulent for Spurs, as they lost 4-1 and Ange Postecoglou’s perfect start to the Premier League came to an end. Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were issued red cards throughout the game, which ruined the game and cost the home team dearly. Interestingly, Spurs stuck with their high defensive line even though they were short on players.
Chelsea took advantage of the situation, often breaking past the high line to give themselves one-on-one opportunities against Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario. Vicario produced some outstanding saves, but he was unable to stop Nicolas Jackson from scoring three identical goals in the dying minutes to give Chelsea the victory.
Postecoglou defended the high defensive line strategy to Sky Sports, saying, “It is just who we are, mate, it is who we are and who we will be for as long as I am here.” The choice to stick with the strategy was criticized. We will try if it comes down to five men.
Numerous VAR interventions were made during the game, including calls about red cards, penalties, offsides, and multiple goals that were disallowed. Postecoglou voiced his displeasure with the process being taken away from the on-pitch referee, even though he didn’t openly disagree with the judgments.
“Every decision made will be the subject of a forensic investigation,” he declared. “It seems like this is how the game is going, and I don’t like it.” We spent a lot of time today standing around, which may be enjoyable for some people, but I would much rather see us play football.
Postecoglou added, “You have to accept the referee’s decision,” in response to criticism about the referee’s declining authority. That’s how I was raised. The game will reach to the point where the referees have no power left due to this ongoing erosion of their authority. A few kilometers away, someone with a TV screen will be in charge of us. Finally, he underlined, “The choice is the choice.”
