Chelsea and Manchester City battled to a thrilling 4–4 tie at Stamford Bridge, with Cole Palmer’s stoppage-time penalty against his former team keeping the champions from winning.
Erling Haaland scored the opening penalty of the dramatic match after Marc Cucurella was found to have fouled him in the box. This was a controversial call that might have gone any way. Raheem Sterling, who completed an incredible move against his former team, and Thiago Silva scored goals for Chelsea in short succession as they rallied forcefully.
But the winners answered right away when Manuel Akanji went unmarked to tie the score just before halftime. Ninety seconds into the second half, Haaland took advantage of the situation by tucking in Phil Foden’s cross.
Nicolas Jackson struck home a rebound to pull Chelsea level, ending City’s lead. Malo Gusto curled over, giving the Blues a glorious opportunity, but City scored again. Silva’s leg was outstretched, but Rodri’s strike reached the net and restored City’s advantage.
