Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle, is a target for Scotland, who are hoping that after his most recent England rejection, he will switch allegiances.
Gordon played a key role in the Young Lions’ victory at the European Championship last summer and has made multiple appearances for England’s under-21 team. North Macedonia and Malta are up next for Gareth Southgate’s team, but Gordon has received no attention.
Since leaving Everton to join Newcastle, he has flourished, scoring goals against the Magpies’ key competitors. That was insufficient to convince England’s manager to include him in his next squad, and now Scotland is reportedly looking to take advantage, according to the Daily Record.
Gordon is out of position because England has a strong group of wide forwards in Jarrod Bowen, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden. Having a player of his caliber on the Scotland squad would be extremely beneficial, especially with the Euros the following year.
Although Scotland performed brilliantly during qualification, they were unimpressive at their most previous major competition, which was held several years ago. And Scotland is trying to convince a number of English players who aren’t on the national team to join one, including Gordon.
The forward for Newcastle was born in Merseyside, but because of his paternal grandparents, he can play for Scotland. Scotland’s interest is believed to have been sparked by his teammates Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes at Newcastle. John Carver, Scotland’s assistant manager, said the team is actively seeking fresh players.
“We need to investigate if someone has Scottish ancestry,” he said. The choice then rests with him, but we understand that these are significant choices that will affect their future. I watch Newcastle more than any other team because they are my team. We are aware that they have some excellent players who are qualified for Scotland but have never received senior caps for England.
In a recent international friendly at Hampden Park, the Three Lions upset Scotland, winning 3-1. Currently, Ryan Christie and Lyndon Dykes are among their offensive threats.
