Players have consistently voiced concerns over the potential rise in serious injuries due to the escalating number of games. Numerous Premier League players are currently enduring lengthy absences, with blame often directed at the growing fixture list.
According to data from the FIFPRO players’ union, top club players may feature in up to 70 matches per season. International commitments combined with clubs progressing in various competitions contribute to the mounting match schedule.
During international duty, Van Dijk was asked if he would opt to forgo 10% of his salary or reduce his game time for the sake of his health. He expressed frustration at being put in such a predicament, indicating that players shouldn’t have to make such choices.
He highlighted the escalating number of matches, stressing the need for players to voice concerns and work collectively to find a resolution. Van Dijk underlined the significance of health over financial gain, stating his readiness to make financial sacrifices for the greater good. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) to address these concerns.
