Pep Guardiola has extended a heartfelt apology to Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder at Manchester City, as Phillips contemplates departing the team in January.
The 28-year-old, who has had limited game time this season, faces uncertainty regarding his place in the squad for this summer’s European Championship, despite overcoming persistent injury issues.
Despite signing a substantial six-year contract worth £42 million after moving from Leeds United, Phillips had minimal involvement in City’s successes last season, featuring in only 21 games, with fewer than 600 minutes played and just two Premier League starts.
Although multiple European clubs expressed interest in signing Phillips, including Tottenham, Newcastle, and Juventus, he chose to stay at Etihad Stadium during the summer transfer window. However, his lack of playing time has fueled speculation about his imminent departure from the treble-winning team next month.
Ahead of the match against Luton Town, Guardiola expressed remorse to Phillips for the limited minutes on the field, casting doubt on Phillips’ future at the club.
“I deeply regret the situation,” said Guardiola. “I’m uncertain about Kalvin Phillips’ future. He has a great attitude, and I regret not giving him more opportunities. My selections are based on the team dynamics.”
