Chelsea intends to offload three players, including a recent signing, in a transfer move amounting to £110 million after Mauricio Pochettino advocated for improvements to the team.
The club aims to sell three starting lineup players to generate funds for additional transfers in January, as they strive to recover from a recent 2-0 loss to Everton, resulting in a decline to the 12th position in the Premier League, far from their previous standing. Despite significant summer investments in new players totaling over £400 million, Chelsea has struggled, managing just five wins in 16 league matches.
Pochettino’s appeal for enhancement during the next transfer market highlighted the urgency to acquire a new center striker, with Ivan Toney from Brentford and Victor Osimhen from Napoli being linked to a potential move to Stamford Bridge.
To align with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, Chelsea must offload players in the January window to facilitate the addition of a prominent striker. Among those anticipated to depart are Ian Maatsen, Noni Madueke, and Trevor Chalobah.
Chalobah, due to a thigh injury, hasn’t featured for Chelsea this season and is poised for a move away, with Crystal Palace expressing interest. Despite interest from Bayern Munich earlier, negotiations fell through in the summer for the defender, who had 33 appearances across competitions last season.
Maatsen, eyed by Borussia Dortmund, might potentially leave Chelsea, although the German club’s intentions for a long-term deal remain unclear. Madueke, acquired from PSV for £28.5 million in January, has struggled to make an impact, leading to a decline in his role under Pochettino, notably not starting a Premier League match since October.
Other players possibly on the chopping block as Chelsea seeks financial stability include Marc Cucurella, who deputized for Ben Chilwell, and Armando Broja, scoring once this season during a match against Fulham.
