Christopher Nkunku’s highly anticipated debut for Chelsea might happen this Saturday as they travel to face Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge.
Nkunku, who moved from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £52 million in the summer, hasn’t featured for Chelsea due to a knee surgery. Mauricio Pochettino, the manager overseeing the French 26-year-old’s tenure, confirmed that Nkunku will be included in the squad for the upcoming match against Sheffield United, having participated fully in training this week.
Regarding Nkunku’s recovery progress, Pochettino expressed positivity, stating, “It’s very encouraging news.” He affirmed Nkunku’s return to the squad, emphasizing the importance of allowing him to reintegrate without undue pressure.
Meanwhile, Malo Gusto, the right-back, has also returned to full training. However, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and captain Reece James are set for a considerable spell on the sidelines due to injuries sustained in the previous weekend’s game.
Reece James, who had to be substituted in Everton’s defeat, suffered a hamstring injury, marking another setback in his injury-prone career. The scans revealed the severity, indicating a need for further time off due to the injury.
Pochettino expressed the need for careful consideration of James’ situation, highlighting his emotional state and the management of his recovery process. Djordje Petrovic, whom Pochettino regards highly for his potential, is likely to deputize for Sanchez as the goalkeeper is undergoing specialized treatment for a knee issue.
Chelsea’s statement indicated that Cucurella’s injury will be assessed by specialists, determining the next steps for his recovery. Additionally, Reece James’ significant hamstring injury was confirmed earlier this week, adding to the club’s injury woes.
While midfielder Romeo Lavia has resumed limited training, several players including Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Noni Madueke remain unavailable for selection.
