Should either Manchester United or Liverpool emerge victorious in the Champions League next season, they will be ineligible to participate in the revamped Club World Cup slated for 2025.
FIFA plans to implement substantial changes to its premier club competition following the ongoing 2023 edition currently held in Saudi Arabia. The existing structure pits continent champions against each other annually, but the dominance of Champions League winners has hindered the tournament’s widespread appeal since its inception in 2000. Manchester City faces Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in the semi-finals, with the final to feature Brazil’s Fluminense or Egypt’s Al Ahly.
To elevate the Club World Cup’s status, FIFA aims to expand it from seven to 32 teams for the 2025 edition in the United States, held every four years. FIFA will permit only two clubs per nation, favoring Champions League winners within a four-year period for entry.
Chelsea and Manchester City hold the two spots for England based on their Champions League triumphs in 2021 and current European success. However, if more than two continental winners emerge from a nation in a qualifying period, FIFA may reconsider. Therefore, should Arsenal win this year’s Champions League, they become eligible for the 2025 Club World Cup.
Teams like Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Liverpool, or Tottenham are unlikely participants due to their absence from the current Champions League knockout stages.
In a recent meeting in Jeddah, FIFA outlined the criteria for 2025 Club World Cup qualification. Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Chelsea secured spots based on their 2022 Champions League victories. Twelve European teams will partake, with nine others chosen based on Champions League performances since 2020. Teams like Benfica, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, and Porto are confirmed entries.
Remaining teams such as Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig, Barcelona, Juventus, Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg, Lazio, Arsenal, Copenhagen, Real Sociedad, and PSV can secure berths by winning this year’s Champions League.
