Manchester City is gearing up to make a £22 million offer for a promising Argentine talent expected to depart in 2022. Claudio Echeverri, a teenage midfielder from Argentina, is reportedly the subject of Manchester City’s bid.
Earlier this month, reports indicated City’s interest in signing the rising star Echeverri, placing them among the top contenders for his signature.
Echeverri currently plays for River Plate, where former player Julian Alvarez used to excel before joining Etihad Stadium. Alvarez’s success following his move to City suggests the club’s effectiveness in that acquisition, potentially hinting at a similar approach for Echeverri.
Manchester City is eyeing a £22 million bid for Echeverri, coinciding with the 2023 Trofeo de Campeones match between River Plate and Rosario Central, in which he is set to feature.
According to journalist Cesar Merlo, City intends to evaluate River Plate’s stance on Echeverri. The plan involves loaning Echeverri back to River for six to twelve months before making the £22 million bid for the attacking midfielder.
Similarly, City’s successful strategy with Alvarez involved reaching an agreement and allowing him to continue playing at River Plate before officially joining City’s main team in the summer of 2022, showcasing the club’s wise decision-making.
Echeverri, a 17-year-old talent, recently made his debut for River against Rosario Central. He mentioned to AS that he wouldn’t sign a new contract but would stay for six months to a year.
With Echeverri’s current deal expiring in December 2024, City sees an opportunity for a promising acquisition, reminiscent of their successful move for Julian Alvarez.
City’s pursuit of Echeverri faces competition from Chelsea and Barcelona, as reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano. Despite the competition, City is confident in their chances, likely leveraging the Alvarez journey to appeal to Echeverri.
