A top-four English manager was sacked today following a humbling Premier League defeat. Neil Wood, the manager of Salford City, was let go due to concerns about the team’s potential relegation.
After a disappointing 5-1 loss to Tranmere on Tuesday, Salford City decided to part ways with the 40-year-old manager. While Wood had previously guided Salford to the League Two Playoffs, this season has been challenging, with the team hovering close to relegation.
Since the start of the season, the Manchester United-owned club has suffered 16 defeats, and their recent Boxing Day loss against Tranmere prompted the owners to dismiss the manager. The official club statement acknowledged Neil Wood’s departure, thanking him for his dedicated work over the past 18 months, including achieving the club’s highest League Two finish last season. The club wished him well in his future endeavors.
Assistant Coach Simon Wiles will oversee the team’s preparation for the upcoming match against Grimsby Town as the club initiates the search for a new manager.
Wood, previously the manager of Manchester United’s U23 squad, transitioned to Salford City in May 2022, overseeing 88 games. Simon Wiles will take charge of Salford City’s team for the match against Grimsby Town.
The club is co-owned by Manchester United legends such as Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Gary Neville.
