Borussia Dortmund is expressing optimism about securing the transfer of Ian Maatsen during the January transfer window, although the specifics of the deal with Chelsea are still under discussion.
Despite impressing during a preseason tour in the United States and a successful loan spell at Burnley last season, where he was named in the league’s Team of the Season under Vincent Kompany, Maatsen has had limited opportunities under the Argentine coach at Chelsea. Although he primarily plays as a left-back, he’s versatile across various flank positions.
Despite earlier indications from Pochettino about Maatsen being more involved, ongoing talks about the player’s future suggest a departure seems increasingly likely.
Pochettino had previously mentioned Maatsen’s potential increased involvement due to changes in the injury situation but stressed the need for patience with young players, acknowledging their occasional struggles.
While Maatsen rejected a transfer to Burnley despite Chelsea’s approval of the £31 million offer for a permanent deal, his desire to secure a place in Chelsea’s starting lineup hasn’t materialized. Consequently, it appears that Chelsea is open to his departure in January, although Dortmund is more inclined toward a loan deal than a permanent transfer.
