Dortmund is edging towards finalizing a deal for Ian Maatsen, prompting Chelsea to contemplate entering the market for a new left-back.
Amidst Chelsea’s recent news and discussions, Maatsen was loaned to Burnley for the 2022-2023 season after the Blues accepted an offer for the Dutch player last summer.
Despite this, Maatsen expressed a desire to remain at Stamford Bridge in hopes of securing a starting position. However, his opportunities to start have been limited, with only three starts throughout the season, two of which were in the Carabao Cup.
While Maatsen has made a total of 15 appearances, most of them occurred on the flank, rather than his preferred left defensive position.
Considering Maatsen’s roots in the Chelsea academy, the club is contemplating selling him, which would significantly bolster available funds for the January transfer window.
Although Dortmund prefers a loan, negotiations are progressing, and both clubs are nearing an agreement on the transfer fee, as per the Telegraph.
Following this potential deal, Chelsea will assess their options at left-back, especially with Ben Chilwell still sidelined due to injury. Additionally, Marc Cucurella might also depart the club.
