While Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea are yet to finalize the terms of the transfer, Borussia Dortmund seems optimistic about landing Ian Maatsen during the January transfer window.
Despite his impressive preseason tour in the United States and an exceptional Championship loan spell at Burnley under Vincent Kompany, where he earned a spot in the league’s Team of the Season, Maatsen has played a minor role under the Argentine coach at Chelsea, leaving many surprised.
Primarily a left-back but versatile across various flank positions, Maatsen’s expected increased involvement, as previously suggested by Pochettino, now seems less likely due to ongoing discussions about his future.
Pochettino mentioned in a press conference before Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Sheffield United last month that Maatsen would have an increased role given the change in the injury situation. However, the coach emphasized that young players might show brilliance in preseason but need time to adjust afterward.
While Maatsen rejected a £31 million permanent contract offer from Burnley, preferring to strive for a place in Chelsea’s starting lineup, the situation has not materialized as hoped. This has led Chelsea to consider letting him leave in January, with Dortmund preferring a loan deal rather than a permanent move.
