Following Roma’s one-win streak in five Serie A games, Jose Mourinho, the former Manchester United manager, has been sacked, concluding his two and a half-year tenure with the club.
The 60-year-old took over as Roma manager in May 2021, securing victory in the Europa Conference League in his first season, ending I Giallorossi’s 11-year trophy drought. In the subsequent 2022/23 season, Mourinho guided them to the Europa League final, narrowly losing to Sevilla on penalties.
Currently, Roma sits in the ninth position in the Serie A standings, accumulating 29 points from 20 matches in the first half of the season. The team managed only one win in their last six league games, concluding with a 3-1 loss to AC Milan in Mourinho’s final match in charge.
A statement from Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin expressed gratitude to Jose on behalf of the entire AS Roma community for his passion and dedication. The decision to part ways was emphasized as a necessary change for the club’s best interests. Best wishes were extended to Mourinho and his team for their future endeavors.
Mourinho took charge at Roma for the 2021/22 season, aiming to improve the team’s seventh-place finish in Serie A. Despite notable financial investments in players like Tammy Abraham, Rui Patricio, and Matias Vina, Mourinho had to offload several players to comply with UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations.
In Mourinho’s first season, Roma secured a sixth-place finish and won the Europa Conference League. In the subsequent season, they concluded in the same position, reaching the Europa League final after notable victories against teams like Red Bull Salzburg, Real Sociedad, and Bayer Leverkusen.
