Despite issues with agents, Manchester City remains keen on securing 20-goal player Matija Popovic on a free transfer, following AC Milan’s dissatisfaction with the player’s representatives. According to BILD’s Head of Football, Christian Falk, Manchester City is still interested in Popovic, despite AC Milan previously appearing closer to signing the Serbian wonderkid.
The deal with AC Milan reportedly fell through due to dissatisfaction with Popovic’s representatives’ actions as the agreement neared completion. While the player desires to join AC Milan, the club remains ambivalent regarding the entourage’s requests.
Daniele Longo of Calciomercato reported that the negotiation between Milan and Popovic’s agents remains blocked, and AC Milan is no longer in contention. Popovic, often likened to Michu, is considered one of Europe’s most exciting talents, having scored 20 goals in 24 games in the Kadetska Liga during the 2022–2023 season.
Falk mentioned that Manchester City, along with Bayern Munich and Napoli, is still in the running for Popovic. As Popovic became a free agent after his Partizan contract expired, Manchester City has the advantage of time, as the transfer doesn’t need to be finalized before the deadline.
However, the competition with Napoli and Bayern Munich puts some time pressure on Manchester City to secure the young talent’s signature. If disagreements with the player’s representatives are resolved, AC Milan might re-enter the picture, but Manchester City has the flexibility to finalize the deal without time constraints.
