Liverpool is reportedly maintaining interest in the young Chelsea talent, Levi Colwill, as they actively seek a new defender in the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old has solidified his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup, featuring in all but one of Chelsea’s 27 games this season, with 23 of those appearances coming as starts. Colwill, who earned his international debut in October, is now in contention for a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024, following successful loan spells at Huddersfield and Brighton.
Despite attracting interest from several teams last summer, including Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester City, and Tottenham, Colwill opted to stay with Chelsea. Pochettino was keen on retaining him, and he eventually signed a new deal, committing to the club until 2029.
TalkSPORT suggests that Liverpool is monitoring Colwill’s situation and may consider making a move, given their current need for defensive reinforcements. With Joel Matip ruled out for the season, and injuries to left-backs Kyle Andrews and Kostas Tsimikas, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to return from knee surgery by the end of the month, Liverpool is in need of defensive options.
Colwill’s versatility, being able to play as a left- and center-back, makes him an appealing prospect for Jurgen Klopp. However, Chelsea, while benefiting financially, is unlikely to be open to selling the homegrown player.
Chelsea’s FFP concerns could influence such a decision, providing some financial relief to Todd Boehly and his associates. This situation is also linked to fellow homegrown players Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja, who are reportedly connected to moves abroad.
Colwill is anticipated to play in Chelsea’s crucial Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg matchup against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.
