In Sunday’s 4-2 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cole Palmer, a forward for Chelsea, achieved a new milestone for the club. Since his summer transfer from Manchester City, the England international has become a vital asset for Chelsea, featuring in 19 Premier League matches, starting 15 of them, including the recent clash with Wolves at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer’s goal in the 19th minute, assisted by Moises Caicedo, marked his third consecutive home goal across all competitions, as he skillfully slotted the ball into the bottom corner with his weaker right foot. This goal not only gave Mauricio Pochettino’s team an early advantage but also secured Palmer’s eleventh league goal of the 2023–24 season, breaking a club record.
At just 21 years old, Palmer made Premier League history by becoming the first player of his age to score ten or more goals in a single season. However, despite his efforts, Wolves rallied to claim victory in West London. Matheus Cunha blocked Palmer’s subsequent attempt in the 22nd minute, while Axel Disasi’s own goal left Chelsea trailing at halftime.
In the second half, Cunha completed his hat-trick for Wolves, further extending their lead, before Thiago Silva’s late consolation goal for Chelsea. The defeat adds to Chelsea’s woes, as they have now suffered four consecutive league losses under manager Rafael Benítez, following their 4-1 loss to Liverpool prior to Sunday’s defeat.
This downturn in form sees Chelsea plummeting to the bottom half of the Premier League standings, while Wolves ascend to 10th position, marking a challenging period for the London club.
