Manchester United’s rising star, Kobbie Mainoo, is making remarkable strides and has drawn comparisons to Paul Pogba.
While drawing parallels between established and emerging players is often inevitable, Mainoo’s performance for Manchester United’s Under-21s against Salford City in October only intensified these comparisons.
Mainoo showcased his skills with two assists and displayed impressive passing abilities reminiscent of Pogba’s style under the floodlights. The MEN’s match report from that game highlighted Mainoo’s readiness for first-team football, stating, “The midfielder has outgrown academy football, and his talent is needed in the first team.”
Following his return from injury, Mainoo was gradually integrated into the U21s lineup before earning opportunities with the first team under Erik ten Hag. Since breaking into the senior squad this season, the 18-year-old has been exceptional and has become a key player, earning a regular spot on the team sheet.
While speaking last year shortly after his senior debut, someone close to Mainoo confidently predicted that he would play for England. Despite making just 12 appearances for United, Mainoo now has an outside chance of making the Three Lions squad for the upcoming European Championship.
Mainoo’s progress has been remarkable, and he possesses all the attributes to become a world-class talent, much like Pogba did when emerging from the club’s academy in the late 2000s.
Unlike Pogba, who left on a free transfer to Juventus in 2012, Mainoo’s future at United appears secure, with suggestions that the team should be built around him. Known for his quiet and likeable demeanor, Mainoo is kept well-grounded by his parents, unlike Pogba, who had character issues during his time at United.
Mainoo has mainly played as a deep-lying midfielder in his senior appearances, but there are suggestions that his long-term future could be as a No.8. Improving his goal-scoring abilities has been identified as an area for growth, and his recent goals against Newport County and Wolves demonstrate his progress in this aspect.
Mainoo’s match-winning goal against Wolves was described as a moment of individual brilliance, earning him praise as a ‘generational talent’ from Rasmus Hojlund. Erik ten Hag also commended Mainoo’s progress, emphasizing his determination and character.
With a strong track record of developing talent, Ten Hag believes Mainoo is in the right environment to elevate his game to another level.
