The 18-year-old prodigy has showcased remarkable maturity and composure, surpassing his age, to establish himself as a pivotal player under Erik ten Hag’s guidance this season.
In February 2023, Mainoo extended his contract at Old Trafford until 2027. However, preliminary discussions for an upgraded contract have been initiated following his exceptional performances in the 2023/24 season, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
Both Manchester United and Mainoo’s representatives remain calm about the situation, preferring to focus on finishing the season on the pitch. Mainoo has already triggered several performance-related bonuses included in his current contract.
Negotiations are expected to intensify during the summer, with Mainoo expressing satisfaction in playing alongside senior defensive midfielder Casemiro, allowing him to occupy more advanced positions on the field.
Having made 18 senior appearances for United this season, Mainoo recently praised Erik ten Hag for providing him with the opportunity to transition from the junior setup to the senior squad.
“I am grateful that he has given me an opportunity to play for this club,” Mainoo stated, appreciating Ten Hag’s continuous challenges, which he believes accelerate player development.
Rumors suggest that Mainoo may secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2024 European Championship, with the possibility of inclusion in upcoming international matches against Belgium and Brazil in March.
However, he is also eligible to represent Ghana, with the Ghana Football Association expressing interest in recruiting him for their senior squad. Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Ghana Football Association, highlighted Mainoo as an exceptional talent whom the organization eagerly seeks to collaborate with.
