In the aftermath of Arsenal’s narrow 2-1 victory over Brentford, manager Thomas Frank has openly criticized the officiating, particularly focusing on Kai Havertz’s pivotal role in the match. Frank firmly believes that Havertz should have received a red card prior to netting the decisive goal for Arsenal.
Brentford, keen on securing a valuable point against the title contenders, seemed to be on track as Yoane Wissa equalized Declan Rice’s early goal just before halftime. However, Havertz, reminiscent of their previous encounter in November, emerged as the thorn in Brentford’s side once again, sealing the win for Arsenal with a late strike.
Frank’s frustration stems from what he perceives as Havertz’s fortunate escape from dismissal after what he describes as a dive in the penalty box following a challenge from Nathan Collins. Despite already being booked, Havertz went down under minimal contact, prompting vehement appeals from Brentford players for a second yellow card. Referee Rob Jones, however, opted not to penalize Havertz, a decision Frank vehemently contests, labeling it a “clear dive.”
In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Frank voiced his discontent, stating, “I actually think, and I would never normally do this, but I think Havertz shouldn’t have been on the pitch when he scored the goal.” He further supported his claim by referencing replay evidence, insinuating that the assistant referee should have intervened.
Furthermore, Frank provided an update on the status of captain Christian Norgaard, who was forced off in the first half due to injury, adding to Brentford’s woes during the match at the Emirates Stadium.
