Mason Greenwood is considering relaunching his international career with Jamaica, despite having never played for them before. Eligible to switch allegiance from England, Greenwood’s future gained clarity after Manchester United severed ties with him this week, following his tumultuous past involving legal allegations, which were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence.
Manchester United, after an internal review, decided to support Greenwood in seeking opportunities elsewhere, with several clubs showing interest in a potential loan deal. Among them, Roma and Jose Mourinho’s team, along with Atalanta, Inter, Monaco, and clubs in Germany, Turkey, and Spain have emerged as potential destinations. Even the Saudi Pro League is monitoring the situation closely.
Despite having significant club experience at just 20 years old, Greenwood lacks senior international exposure. His England debut in September 2020 was overshadowed by a Covid-19 protocol breach, leading to his deportation from the national team. While there were discussions of his potential return to the England squad, Greenwood was never selected, with his absence attributed to both illness and off-field issues.
With his career on hold since January 2022 and the possibility of representing England dwindling, Greenwood may opt to play for Jamaica. The Jamaica Football Federation has expressed interest, and Greenwood has been spotted wearing the national team’s tracksuit. FIFA rules allow him to switch allegiance, as he has only played one senior international game for England before turning 21, making him eligible for a nationality change under revised regulations implemented in 2020.
