After an internal evaluation lasting six months, Manchester United opted to support Greenwood in pursuing his career elsewhere, with interest from teams primarily leaning towards a loan rather than a permanent transfer.
Reports suggest Roma, potentially reuniting with Jose Mourinho, is one of the clubs willing to offer Greenwood a platform to reignite his career.
He has also explored loan options with Atalanta, Inter, Monaco, and teams in Germany, Turkey, Spain, and the Saudi Pro League, among others.
Despite accumulating 135 first-team club appearances by the age of 20, Greenwood lacks significant senior international experience.
Although he made his England debut in September 2020, an incident involving a breach of Covid-19 quarantine restrictions led to his dismissal from the team camp, hindering his progress.
Efforts were made by England manager Gareth Southgate to reconcile with Greenwood and offer him another chance, but his selection was not forthcoming, leading to speculation about his future international prospects.
Given his ancestry, Greenwood has the option to represent Jamaica, with interest from the Jamaica Football Federation dating back to 2021, and recent sightings of him donning the team’s tracksuit.
Under FIFA’s international eligibility rules revised in 2020, players like Greenwood may switch their allegiance provided they have not played more than three senior international matches before turning 21.
As Greenwood was 18 years old during his sole appearance for England, he remains eligible for a switch.
