Manchester United is reportedly considering a surprising move by targeting Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin as a possible replacement for Andre Onana.
According to Nacional, Manchester United has submitted an offer for Lunin as they prepare for the forthcoming summer transfer window.
Lunin has impressed during his spell at Real Madrid this season, filling in commendably for the injured Thibaut Courtois, who has been sidelined with an ACL injury.
Despite his commendable performances, Lunin understands that Courtois is likely to reclaim his position as the first-choice goalkeeper upon his return, prompting him to contemplate a move to a different club.
Manchester United’s interest in Lunin arises as they assess their options regarding their current top goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who has had a disappointing debut season at the club.
Onana joined Manchester United last summer from Inter Milan for a substantial fee of €51 million plus €4 million in bonuses, following an impressive stint with Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Expectations were high for the 27-year-old goalkeeper, especially after his outstanding performances in the Champions League, where he played a key role in Inter Milan’s journey to the final.
However, Onana’s first season at Manchester United has been marred by errors, although he has shown signs of improvement in 2024.
He has faced criticism for several costly mistakes, particularly during Manchester United’s Champions League group stage encounters against Galatasaray, Copenhagen, and Bayern Munich.
Reports from Germany suggest that Bayern Munich is keen on acquiring Onana as a long-term successor to their veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who is set to turn 38 this year.
Meanwhile, Lunin’s contract with Real Madrid is due to expire in 2025, making him a viable option for Manchester United if they opt to pursue a transfer.
The potential signing of Lunin could offer Manchester United a dependable goalkeeping option as they seek to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
