Jose Mourinho is considering his next move after being dismissed as Roma’s manager on Tuesday, sources have told 90min. Despite expressing his desire to stay at Roma beyond the summer, Mourinho’s two and a half-year tenure came to an end due to a poor run of results that left the team ninth in Serie A. While Mourinho has no concrete plans in place, he is expected to receive numerous offers, with a potential return to the Premier League being mooted.
However, 90min understands that a move to either Newcastle United or Chelsea would be a surprise at this stage. Chelsea’s owners are willing to give current manager Mauricio Pochettino more time, despite a disappointing start to the season, and will reassess his position in the summer. Similarly, Newcastle United are keen to give manager Eddie Howe more time, despite his struggles with a lengthy injury list this season.
Mourinho has previously expressed interest in managing in Saudi Arabia, and 90min understands that he will likely receive a contract offer from the Saudi Pro League if he remains unemployed by the summer. Al Hilal had previously approached Mourinho with a £30 million annual offer, but are unlikely to part ways with their current manager, who is leading the team to success in the league and Asian Champions League. However, Al Ahli and Al Nassr, who have previously considered Mourinho for managerial roles, may attempt to recruit him.
Alternatively, Mourinho may explore opportunities in international management, with several positions likely to become available after Euro 2024 and the Copa America. While Gareth Southgate has expressed his desire to continue as England manager, Mourinho is reportedly open to taking the position should it become available after the Euros.
