When asked about comparisons to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Vincent Kompany responded.
The former Etihad captain addressed the media yesterday as he prepares his team for the upcoming season.
Bayern Munich aims to bounce back after a disappointing 2023/24 season, finishing without any trophies.
They placed third in the Bundesliga, behind title-winners Bayer Leverkusen and second-placed Stuttgart, and were eliminated by Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.
Following Thomas Tuchel’s departure, Bayern surprisingly appointed Vincent Kompany, despite his supervision of Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League.
During a news conference on Monday, Kompany was asked about comparisons to his former boss, Pep Guardiola. Kompany had successfully promoted Burnley to the Premier League and played impressive football in the Championship, but struggled to transition that style to the Premier League, ultimately leading to Burnley’s relegation.
Kompany, aiming for better results at Bayern, shared his thoughts (via Bayern Munich’s official YouTube channel): “He is one of the most, if not the most, outstanding coaches of this age.
People like him are always influential. I know this subject will constantly come up, and I have a lot of respect for him, but for me, the most important thing is to express my own thoughts. I adapt my thoughts to my personality.
You learn a lot from your instructors, as well as from your own experiences. Of course, Pep Guardiola had a significant impact on me. But it’s critical to go your own path.”
Many managers today try to emulate Pep or adapt his ideas, as his influence on the game is undeniable.
However, no one can fully match him. Pep, earning £378,000-a-week at City, has consistently achieved extraordinary feats, as evidenced by his trophy collection.
It will be interesting to see how Kompany fares at Bayern. Despite Burnley’s relegation, some believe he was fortunate to land the role.
Now, with world-class players at his disposal, there’s a good chance he will push Leverkusen and reclaim the championship.
