Manchester City faces a potential ban from PGMOL after breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules with 115 charges, putting the future of the Premier League giants at risk.

    So, what happened?

The current Premier League champions face 115 allegations related to alleged financial fair play violations.

Everton and Nottingham Forest, two fierce Premier League rivals, have lost points due to breaches of the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Despite these allegations, EFL chairman MacAnthony, who oversees Peterborough in League One, doubts any significant action will be taken, referencing Juve’s 2006 Calciopoli incident.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he expressed uncertainty about the specific rules and penalties for such allegations, calling it all “gibberish” and predicting media hype around potential relegation or past titles being revoked.

He believes you can’t undo the past and points out that in sports, rule-bending is common as teams try to navigate pay ceilings and regulations to build strong teams.

He emphasized that he is not accusing Manchester City of wrongdoing but noted that the Premier League is not immune to such tactics.

Given City’s achievements over the past decade, he suggests they are an easy target for media scrutiny and advises waiting to see what unfolds.

Amid this FFP drama, questions about Pep Guardiola’s future at City have arisen. MacAnthony mentioned that Guardiola is entering the final year of his contract and speculated that, like Jurgen Klopp, he might need a break after eight intense years at City.

He suggested that the relentless nature of the job, especially since Covid, could lead to burnout, and taking a year off might be beneficial for Guardiola’s well-being.

    What’s next?

City, having won four consecutive Premier League titles, will play preseason friendlies against AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea in the United States. They will start their title defense on August 18 at Stamford Bridge.
