Even though Cancelo hasn’t played for Manchester City since January 2023 due to a falling out with Guardiola, he is still under contract with the club until 2027.
After being loaned to Bayern Munich for the second half of the 2022–2023 season, he spent the entire following season at Barcelona. Since returning from his time in Portugal, Cancelo has been training with his former teammates.
Guardiola’s Comments
“He’s training with us. We’ll see what happens. He might stay or go out on loan. Right now, I’m not sure. He’s training with us and showing great attitude in the sessions.
He’s passionate about football,” Guardiola said during a press conference. When asked directly if Cancelo would stay with City for the entire season, he replied, “It could happen, yes.”
Cancelo was one of City’s top players during their Premier League titles in 2020–21 and 2021–22, but after the World Cup, his relationship with Guardiola deteriorated.
According to The Times, during one of Guardiola’s pre-match team talks, Cancelo put on headphones and started listening to music.
Shortly afterward, Guardiola told sports director Txiki Begiristain, “For the good of the team, Cancelo needs to be gone by the end of the transfer window.”
