Manchester United completed an exhilarating comeback to defeat Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, with Ruben Amorim marking his debut in the Manchester Derby with a win as United’s manager.
City took the lead in the first half with a header from Josko Gvardiol, but United mounted a dramatic second-half recovery.
Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot after Matheus Nunes fouled Amad Diallo in the box. Just minutes later, Diallo scored a sensational winner, latching onto a long ball and finishing with precision from a tight angle.
Amorim’s tactical decisions were pivotal in United’s success. He chose a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Andre Onana in goal and a back three of Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire.
Wing-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui provided width, while Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte controlled the midfield. Mason Mount and Amad Diallo supported the lone striker, Rasmus Hojlund.
Pep Guardiola’s City lined up with Ederson in goal and a back three of Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol.
Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva anchored the midfield, with Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes on the wings. Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden played advanced midfield roles, supporting Erling Haaland up front.
The match was intense from the outset, with City enjoying the majority of possession in the first half.
However, United’s defense held strong, and they started to create opportunities in the second half. Diallo’s header forced Ederson into a save, and Fernandes missed a one-on-one chance against the City goalkeeper.
The game turned when Nunes fouled Diallo inside the box, allowing Fernandes to score from the penalty spot. United’s momentum surged, and Diallo’s stunning strike sealed the win for Amorim’s side.
