Pep Guardiola voiced his anger over offensive chants aimed at Phil Foden’s mother by a group of Manchester United fans during the recent Manchester derby.
While the game itself—ending in a goalless draw at Old Trafford—lacked intensity on the pitch, certain United supporters directed abusive remarks at Foden throughout the match.
Guardiola strongly condemned the behavior, noting that although it doesn’t reflect the values of Manchester United as a whole, such conduct is still unacceptable.
“It shows a lack of class, and those responsible should be ashamed,” he said, underlining the importance of respect in a sport watched by millions around the world.
Foden struggled to make an impact in the match and was eventually substituted for Jack Grealish. However, Guardiola dismissed any claims that the young midfielder is low on confidence, pointing instead to his energy and positive attitude in training.
He reaffirmed his belief in Foden’s abilities, reminding everyone of the key role he played in City’s title success last season.
The manager emphasized that the team’s recent dip in performance is a shared responsibility, not just Foden’s. “When the team isn’t performing at its usual level, it can make everyone look off form,” Guardiola explained.
He remains optimistic, with the FA Cup semi-finals and the final stretch of league games offering a chance to turn things around.
Guardiola’s message was one of belief and determination: Foden will regain his form, and the squad will push hard to finish the season strong.
“Everyone will give their all, learning from each game, and showing the impact they’re capable of,” he concluded.
