Mauricio Pochettino expressed hope that Reece James’ recent hamstring injury wouldn’t be severe. The Chelsea captain suffered a setback during their 2-0 defeat against Everton.
Pochettino emphasized the need for additional players in the January transfer window, despite the club’s significant £435 million expenditure on players during the summer. With Chelsea currently ranking 12th in the Premier League and having won just one of their last five matches, Pochettino believes they require more scorers.
“We’ll reassess at the halfway point of the season,” he remarked following the Everton loss. “That’s the reality. If we’re not producing enough, we may need to make adjustments. We’ll evaluate that with the coaching staff to improve our performance in the second half of the season.”
He added, “We need to take stronger action. After that, there will be a comprehensive assessment, and when the transfer window opens, we’ll consider our options. I’m unsure whether we’ll ask for more or fewer players. We’ll gauge public opinion against the actual situation. We’re not seeing something.”
Pochettino faced further challenges when goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and left-back Marc Cucurella were forced off during the match. “Robert Sanchez had an issue from the Manchester United game; it was a knee problem,” he explained.
“He requested a substitution because he felt discomfort in the second half. We’re hopeful it’s not serious. Likewise, for Marc Cucurella, who sustained a hip injury. We hope these issues won’t turn out to be major concerns.”
“These are the circumstances we’ve been dealing with since the beginning, and it’s a lot for a young team that needs all its components to gel if we want to establish something substantial.”
