AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli stated he was unaware of Sandro Tonali’s gambling issues.
Newcastle signed the Italian international midfielder from Milan for £55 million during the summer. However, it was disclosed two months later that he was under investigation for breaking betting laws, and his agent confessed he struggled with gambling addiction.
Tonali received a ten-month suspension at the end of October, raising concerns about Milan’s awareness before selling their promising young talent. Pioli affirmed on Tuesday night that Newcastle received a “great” offer, adding, “No, I wasn’t informed about Sandro’s problem.”
“He was a sensible and respectful young man who maintained good conduct.” Although I believe I have a close, open relationship with players, my discussions are not limited to football alone. However, I’m unaware of their activities outside the pitch.”
When questioned if he sympathized with Newcastle for investing heavily in a player now banned until the end of August, Pioli responded, “Well, at the time of signing, it seemed like a good deal. They struck a fantastic deal, and nobody could have anticipated what happened later.”
“I have a good rapport with Tonali. During his time here, he was a cheerful and helpful young man. He has found himself entangled in a sensitive matter. We support him, and I hope this experience will be instructive for him. Can he bounce back? Yes, in terms of his tactical and physical abilities.”
Amid heavy rain at St James’ Park on Tuesday, Pioli gathered the team but didn’t conduct training, stating, “Our objective is to win the game.” We’re aware of what to expect and who our opponent is. We need to seize this opportunity.”
Following Tonali’s suspension announcement in October, Howe remarked, “I need to assess the period he’ll be unavailable and devise a plan for him.” It will be challenging for him. He’ll face boredom without playing, and training will be demanding, as I’ve witnessed with many athletes.
“We must keep his mind sharp and maintain his physical condition for him to perform when he returns.” Our task is to ensure he emerges as a better player after this period.

“If he’s sidelined for that duration, it’ll be tough for him.” A ten-month ban is lengthy, especially for a professional athlete’s duties, particularly on the field. We can practice small-sided games in training.”
