Manchester United’s loanee Sergio Reguilon, who joined in summer 2023, is set to return to Tottenham Hotspur. The Spanish left-back was initially brought in by United due to depth issues, particularly with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s injuries. His loan deal had a mid-season break clause.
Reguilon has made 12 appearances for United this season, assisting due to injuries. With Shaw’s return and Malacia’s near comeback, along with versatile players like Diogo Dalot and Sofyan Amrabat, United finds it practical for Reguilon to head back to Tottenham.
Before securing Reguilon’s loan, United considered bringing in Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, but talks failed, keeping Cucurella at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham may opt to keep Reguilon for the season. Both clubs compete only in the Premier League and FA Cup, and Reguilon’s return offers Spurs added defensive choices, with the loan agreement allowing flexibility.
Reguilon impressed in Tottenham’s pre-season under Ange Postecoglou, but Destiny Udogie became the preferred starting left-back for the 2023/24 season.
Reguilon’s return adheres to FIFA regulations, allowing players to feature for a maximum of two clubs in a season. Tottenham’s upcoming matches include an FA Cup clash against Burnley and a Premier League encounter with Manchester United on January 14.
