Arsenal is expected to shell out at least £60 million to acquire Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in January.
The 22-year-old, who made a move from Lille to Goodison Park for £33 million in June 2022, has become an essential player for manager Sean Dyche’s Everton.
Playing as a versatile box-to-box midfielder, Onana has amassed 56 appearances for Everton across various competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists. This season alone, he has featured in 21 matches.
Despite his contract with Everton running until June 2027, there are talks linking him to a high-profile transfer to a European club.
Manchester United is reportedly keeping a close eye on Onana’s situation at Everton, given rumors suggesting that Everton might need to sell key players to manage their finances and comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
Reports suggest that Arsenal has expressed substantial interest in Onana and has engaged in discussions with Everton about a possible January transfer for the midfielder.
Everton has set a price tag of £60 million for Onana and isn’t looking to offload him this month, according to Football Insider.
Onana holds a crucial role in Dyche’s team, particularly with Everton’s current struggle in the Premier League after losing 10 points in November.
Everton’s record sale stands at Romelu Lukaku’s £75 million move to Manchester United in 2017.
With Arsenal’s significant signings like Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber last summer, it remains uncertain if the club will make a substantial payment in this transfer window.
Amid doubts about the long-term futures of players like Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, Jorginho, and Mohamed Elneny (whose contract ends in June), Arsenal sees Onana as a potential midfield target.
