Arsenal is anticipated to make a payment of at least £60 million to secure the services of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old moved from Lille to Goodison Park in June 2022 for a reported fee of £33 million and has become a crucial part of Sean Dyche’s Everton squad, making 56 appearances across all competitions. Onana, a box-to-box midfielder, has contributed three goals and three assists, featuring in 21 games this season.
Despite Onana being under contract with Everton until June 2027, there have been links suggesting a potential high-value move to another European club. Manchester United is reportedly monitoring his situation amid speculations that Everton might need to sell some key players to meet Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Arsenal has shown strong interest in Onana, reportedly engaging in talks with Everton for a January transfer deal. However, Everton has set an asking price of £60 million and has indicated no willingness to sell the midfielder during this window.
Onana is considered an integral part of Dyche’s squad, especially with Everton facing a relegation battle after a 10-point deduction imposed by the Premier League in November.
Everton’s highest sale to date was Romelu Lukaku’s transfer to Manchester United for £75 million in 2017. Whether Arsenal is willing to make a significant payment this month, having already spent over £200 million last summer on players like Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber, remains to be seen.
Amid uncertainties surrounding the future of players like Mohamed Elneny, Thomas Partey, Jorginho, and Emile Smith Rowe, Arsenal has reportedly earmarked Onana as a potential midfield addition.
