This morning, Fabrizio Romano reports that Kalvin Phillips, previously seen as a disappointment at Manchester City, has made a decision on the Premier League club he intends to join.

An agreement has been reached between Manchester City and West Ham concerning Kalvin Phillips. The English midfielder had expressed the need for regular playing time to secure his place in the England squad for the upcoming European Championship. Despite interest from several clubs, the demands set by City deterred potential suitors. Phillips, who initially considered relocating, has now decided to remain at the Etihad for the second half of the season, with West Ham securing the midfielder’s services.

While the details of the agreement between the two clubs are yet to be confirmed, Phillips is expected to play for West Ham in the remainder of the current season. With limited playing time at City this season, he is not anticipated to be immediately replaced. Instead, City is focused on a long-term signing, targeting 19-year-old Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate, who may stay with his current team for at least the next six months.

Due to Premier League regulations, Phillips will be ineligible to play against his parent club when West Ham visits the Etihad on the final day of the 2023–24 season. City had also shown interest in West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta in the previous season. Looking ahead, City remains open to a permanent transfer for Phillips in the summer.

As the January transfer window unfolds, attention is on Manchester City’s potential moves, although significant acquisitions are deemed unlikely. Recent signings include Jeremy Doku, while the summer window saw the additions of Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol. Matheus Nunes joined from the Wolves on the deadline day. While the focus is on Phillips’ potential departure, City’s transfer activities will be closely monitored by their dedicated team of specialists throughout the deadline day and beyond.
