Rumors suggest that Arsenal has been presented with the opportunity to acquire Karim Benzema, but the club is now contemplating a deal for a versatile defender. While Arsenal initially prioritized signing a new striker in the January transfer window, Financial Fair Play constraints have limited their ability to do so. MailOnline reports that Benzema was offered to Arsenal earlier this month. However, the Gunners are currently evaluating the possibility of securing a ‘versatile defender’ before the approaching transfer deadline next Wednesday.
Jurrien Timber, a £38 million addition from Ajax, is reportedly progressing well after recovering from a cruciate ligament injury in August. Arsenal is hopeful that Timber will be available to play in the final two months of the season.
Simultaneously, there are negotiations for Benzema to return to Lyon. The 36-year-old, who emerged from Lyon’s academy, became one of Europe’s top young strikers before joining Real Madrid in 2009. Last June, Benzema signed a three-year contract worth €100 million (£85.5 million) per season with Al-Ittihad.
