Mason Greenwood is considering a potential international resurgence with Jamaica, having not yet featured for them in international play, making him eligible to switch his allegiance from England. Manchester United recently severed ties with the 21-year-old, providing some clarity to his club future after legal issues.
While allegations of attempted rape and other offenses against Greenwood were dismissed in February 2023 due to key witness withdrawals and new evidence, Manchester United opted to support him in seeking a new career path. Roma and other teams, including those in Germany, Turkey, and Spain, have expressed interest, with a preference for a loan over a permanent transfer.
Despite having 135 first-team club games at 20, Greenwood lacks significant senior international experience. He made his England debut in September 2020 but faced controversy after breaching Covid-19 quarantine rules. Attempts at reintegration into the England squad were disrupted by the arrest and charges.
Since January 22, 2022, Greenwood hasn’t played professionally, and the possibility of restarting his career prompts speculation about international representation. While initially eligible for England, his Jamaican heritage provides an alternative.
The Jamaica Football Federation has expressed interest since 2021, and Greenwood has been seen in the team’s tracksuit. FIFA rules now allow players to switch allegiance before competing in more than three senior international games before turning 21. Greenwood, who debuted for England at 18, remains eligible for a change in allegiance.
