A third Premier League club has been docked points due to defaulting on transfer payments.

Sheffield United has recently become the third Premier League team to be docked points. The Yorkshire club has lost two points, and this penalty will take effect next season when they compete in the EFL.

Currently, United is nine points away from safety at the bottom of the Premier League and is not expected to avoid relegation this season. If they are relegated to the Championship, they will start the next season with a two-point deduction.

Furthermore, United will receive an additional two-point deduction suspended until the end of their subsequent EFL season.

The EFL imposed this penalty due to the club’s payment defaults to other teams during the 2022-2023 season. “These defaults collectively totaled over 550 days,” stated the EFL.

The suspended points will be enforced “if the club fails to make a payment owed to another club under a transfer or compensation agreement more than five business days after the due date,” and Sheffield United has agreed to pay the £310,455 EFL costs.
