Before the summer transfer window closed, Chelsea purchased Cole Palmer from Manchester City.
One of the biggest unexpected moves of the summer transfer season was Chelsea’s acquisition of Palmer.
The 21-year-old was a product of Manchester City’s youth program and was looking forward to a breakout season with the first team.
Palmer had made 19 Premier League appearances for his hometown club when Chelsea paid £40 million for him on a seven-year deal as he was progressively assimilating into Man City’s starting lineup.
Palmer has explained why he was forced to leave City for Chelsea, acknowledging that it was an odd feeling.
“I’m not saying I avoided the competition (for City positions), because I’ve never done that,” Palmer said.
“I’d been around the first team for a few years and wanted more opportunities to play — in my position and with more impact.”
It was a significant choice. When I left the training facility on Thursday, I was aware that I would be going to London the following day. As I sat in my car, getting ready to leave, it all hit me. You’ve been here 15 years, I thought to myself.
“There’s nothing else that I’m aware of,” I’ve never taken out a loan. I have only ever resided in Manchester. I’ve only ever left Manchester to go on holiday or to away games. It feels strange to go there, but there isn’t much time. I had to get going.
