With Aaron Ramsdale in goal, Jamie Carragher maintains that Arsenal have “no chance” of winning the Premier League.
The manager of the Gunners, Mikel Arteta, has stated that he will rotate the goalies during the season and may even make substitutions while games are in progress, but David Raya has started the team’s previous two games.
Peter Schmeichel, a former goalkeeper for Manchester United, says that Arteta is creating a problem by using two first-choice players.
When asked about Arteta’s choice to bring Raya on board, Schmeichel told CBS Sports: “I don’t get it; I don’t see why you want to create a competition situation for goalkeepers.Stability is the one quality you demand in your goalkeeper. Goalkeepers therefore play a highly reactive role; there is no proactive action taken; everything that needs to be done is something that needs to be done when someone else is doing something; you cannot be proactive and go out and make a save for yourself.
“A stable goalkeeper is what you want. Stop the ball from entering the goal, as it is his job. At some point, if you’re in a competitive setting, you’ll think, “I have to prove I’m a better goalkeeper than the other one, so I’m going to try this or that,” but almost always when goalkeepers try things, they fail.I find this to be absurd, and I believe Arteta may be inadvertently giving himself a future problem.
Carragher, though, believes that by bringing in Raya, who is generally anticipated to make his loan from Brentford permanent in the summer, Arteta has merely upgraded.
“I understand having two goalkeepers of a similar ability, I understand mentally it might be a problem for the goalkeeper,” stated Carragher.
However, Mikel Arteta “must make that signing to improve Arsenal’s team if he believes he can get a better goalkeeper in the building.”
When Schmeichel asked Carragher if he thought Raya was a superior goalkeeper to Ramsdale, Carragher responded, “100%. Ramsdale will never help Arsenal win the league; there is no chance.Even though Ramsdale is an Arsenal player, he is unable to make the England team.
