Manchester City’s £45 million player has been advised by Nedum Onuoha to consider leaving the club following Pep Guardiola’s recent comments about Kalvin Phillips. Guardiola expressed difficulty envisioning the 27-year-old midfielder in his ideal team, leading the former Manchester City player to share his thoughts on Phillips’ situation at the club.
In a recent video on the ESPN FC YouTube page, Onuoha suggested that City’s handling of Phillips’ situation is puzzling. He pointed out the lack of playing time despite other midfielders regularly starting, indicating a potential lack of future opportunities for Phillips at the club. Onuoha highlighted the impact of Guardiola’s comments on Phillips, suggesting that such remarks might make it challenging for him to secure a place in the team.
Despite Phillips’ commitment and effort, Onuoha highlighted the challenging position of being limited to training and bench appearances. Looking ahead to January, he expressed hope that Phillips could secure a better opportunity elsewhere to revive his career.
Phillips joined City from Leeds United in the 2022 summer transfer window for £45 million but has struggled to secure significant game time, featuring in 29 matches but starting only five of them. Given Phillips’ aspirations for consistent playing time, Onuoha and others agree that a move away from City in the upcoming transfer window might be the best option for his career aspirations, especially with the upcoming Euro 2016 squad selection in mind.
