Stoke City, a Championship team, has dismissed their manager, Alex Neil, following a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Despite making significant changes with 18 new players during the summer, Stoke City has won only six of their 20 league matches, leaving them in 20th place, just two points above the relegation zone.
The loss to Sheffield Wednesday marked the end for Alex Neil, who was released earlier today. Paul Gallagher has been appointed as the interim manager for the upcoming game against Swansea, with assistance from Alex Morris and former Stoke player Ryan Shawcross.
Chairman John Coates thanked Neil for his dedication to the club while emphasizing the need for a new direction.
He highlighted the immediate necessity for improvement and the appointment of Neil’s replacement to guide the team toward success.
Coates stated on the club’s website:
“Alex is a man of great integrity and has given his best to Stoke City. We appreciate his hard work during his tenure with the club.
“We acknowledge the groundwork he has contributed to assemble a squad of players in whom we have immense confidence to turn around our current situation and pave the way for long-term success.
“However, considering our recent results, we have made the tough choice to seek a new direction for the team.
“The success of our club is of paramount importance, and we are actively working on finding Alex’s successor.”
From 2008 to 2018, Stoke City spent ten seasons in the Premier League under Tony Pulis and then Mark Hughes. Their approach under Pulis made them a challenging team for opponents to face, but since their relegation, they have been unable to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
