The chief of the Saudi Pro League, Michael Emenalo, has expressed interest in recruiting Manchester City’s midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, to play in Saudi Arabia. Several European players, including Riyad Mahrez, switched to Saudi clubs during the recent summer transfer window.
Now, the league’s prominent figure suggests that discussions are underway regarding the potential acquisition of a Manchester City player, specifically targeting De Bruyne.
Emenalo, in a recent conversation with Sky Sports, highlighted the type of players joining the Saudi Pro League and the preferences for new signings. He mentioned notable names like Mo Salah, Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kevin De Bruyne, signaling interest in their availability.
De Bruyne, who was purchased by City from Wolfsburg for £55 million in 2015, has amassed 358 appearances for Manchester City across all competitions. During his tenure, he scored 96 goals and provided 153 assists, earning numerous accolades, including five Premier League titles.
His current contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2025. If the club opts not to extend his contract, the upcoming summer transfer window could present an opportunity for a Saudi club to pursue him.
Given De Bruyne’s significance to the team and prior statements from Pep Guardiola acknowledging his importance, it’s advisable for the club to offer him a new contract to secure his stay at the Etihad beyond the current agreement. This action could potentially deter any efforts by a Saudi club to lure him to the Middle East.
