Gary Neville revealed that Manchester United were compelled to sign Sofyan Amrabat during the summer transfer window. The midfielder’s arrival at Old Trafford on the deadline day in September was aimed at bolstering Erik ten Hag’s squad.
Amrabat, a Morocco international, was secured on an £8.5 million loan deal, with an option for United to make the move permanent for £21.4 million.
Despite Amrabat’s contributions with 17 appearances for United this season, his absence due to the Africa Cup of Nations allowed young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to shine.
The 18-year-old showcased his potential by scoring his debut goal for the club against Newport in the FA Cup, followed by a crucial winner against Wolves in the Premier League.
According to Neville, United’s interest in Amrabat stemmed from Mainoo’s injury. Had Mainoo not been sidelined, United might not have pursued Amrabat from Fiorentina.
Neville emphasized that Mainoo’s talent was recognized early at the club, and his injury prompted United to seek reinforcements.
Mainoo’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Rasmus Hojlund, who arrived at United in the summer, praising the young midfielder’s abilities. Hojlund described Mainoo as a generational talent with a composed demeanor both on and off the pitch, highlighting his maturity and quality despite his young age.
