Reports indicate that Graham Potter is being eyed for the position of Sweden’s national team manager, just days after his name surfaced in discussions about potentially replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Potter, who parted ways with Chelsea in April after a mixed spell of 12 victories in 31 matches, has been without a managerial role since then.
Recent speculation hinted that Potter could be a candidate for the Manchester United job if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS opted for a change in leadership. Ratcliffe, poised to acquire a 25 percent stake in the club, is expected to make alterations to the support staff at Old Trafford.
Potter, highly regarded by INEOS chief Dave Brailsford, had previously been linked with Nice, another club owned by Ratcliffe. There were also murmurs of interest from Napoli in Potter assuming their managerial vacancy.
Now, Potter is emerging as a frontrunner to assume the reins as Sweden’s national team manager following Janne Anderson’s resignation. With Sweden failing to qualify for Euro 2024, the nation is in need of fresh leadership.
Potter has a history in Swedish football, having spent seven and a half years at Ostersund, guiding them from the fourth tier to the Europa League. The Swedish FA general secretary, Andrea Mllerberg, confirmed that Potter is being considered for the role.
Mllerberg stated, “He’s certainly on our radar. We’ll see who expresses interest and how they align with the requirements of the role.”
After departing Ostersunds in 2018, Potter returned to England to manage Championship side Swansea. Following a successful debut season, he assumed the helm at Brighton. Under Potter’s guidance, Brighton underwent a notable shift in playing style, culminating in a ninth-place finish in the 2021-22 season. Potter briefly accepted the Chelsea role in the subsequent season, but with the prospect of leading Sweden’s national team looming, this development could influence any plans for his potential appointment as Manchester United manager. Concerns regarding Ten Hag’s future at Manchester United have also surfaced following their 3-0 loss to Manchester City.
