Raphael Varane and Bruno Fernandes are expected to be fit for Manchester United’s upcoming match against Manchester City.
Despite being doubtful for the FA Cup fixture against Nottingham Forest earlier in the week, both players appear to have recovered well.
Following their successful advancement in the competition’s fifth round, Fernandes was seen leaving the City Ground with a slight hobble.
Although Varane has faced injury setbacks throughout the season, concerns regarding his availability for the Manchester Derby seem to have dissipated.
However, his defensive partner Harry Maguire remains uncertain for the match after missing training on Wednesday due to an undisclosed illness.
Erik ten Hag, speaking ahead of Sunday’s pivotal clash, expressed confidence in Fernandes and Varane’s fitness, noting their positive performances in the FA Cup match.
“They both fought to play and performed admirably in the game,” he remarked. “I expect them to be available on Sunday as well.”
Rasmus Hojlund, who has been sidelined with a muscular injury, is set to miss the City match, adding to United’s injury woes.
With Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka also unavailable, Ten Hag faces defensive selection challenges. Additionally, long-term absentees Anthony Martial and Mason Mount remain sidelined, with Ten Hag emphasizing the need for caution to prevent further setbacks.
Reflecting on Mount’s situation, Ten Hag expressed empathy, acknowledging the frustrations of repeated injuries.
“He’s been struggling since the second game of the season,” Ten Hag stated. “I genuinely feel for him because I know how frustrating it can be. We both had high expectations, and I want to support him through this challenging period.”
