A former player has predicted how fans might react if Manchester City is found guilty of financial violations and relegated from the Premier League.
The Premier League filed 115 financial rule violations against City in February 2023, mainly related to the valuation of sponsorship deals.
City is accused of inflating the value of its sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways, among other allegations.
According to leaked emails reported by German tabloid Der Spiegel, a significant portion of Etihad’s debt to City was allegedly covered directly by the team’s owners, Abu Dhabi United Group.
Premier League CEO Richard Masters stated earlier this year that a date for City’s case to be heard by an impartial panel has been scheduled, with suggestions indicating it might happen this autumn.
If proven guilty, City, the current Premier League champions, could face penalties such as fines or relegation.
Former player Paulo Wanchope, who was part of the last City squad relegated from the Premier League in 2001, believes the supporters will stand by their team regardless of the outcome.
Speaking to LiveScoreBet, the striker expressed confidence that “they will be able to bounce back whatever happens.”
He emphasized the strong fan base, noting that they have previously endured challenges and remained steadfast in their support.
Wanchope highlighted City’s resilience, even during their time in lower divisions, and expressed hope that the club wouldn’t face severe sanctions.
Given the recent point deductions for Everton and Nottingham Forest this season due to minor financial rule violations, it’s plausible that City could face relegation if found guilty.
